Major bank stock prices were mixed Tuesday amid persistent weakness and lack of direction in the overall stock market.

First Interstate Bancorp and NationsBank Corp. paced the gainers. Interstate rose $1.125 to $66 in late trading, while NationsBank was up $1.375 to $51.375. Wells Fargo & Co. was ahead $1.375 to $127.375, and J.P. Morgan & Co. gained 62.5 cents to $77.75.

But on the other side of the ledger, Bank America Corp. slipped 37.5 cents to $45.125, Norwest Corp. was off 12.5 cents to $27.25, and Banc One Corp. was off 12.5 cents to $41.75,
