Shawmut names a director of institutional sales.

Shawmut National Corp. has put Harry Sterling Jr. in charge of its institutional sales effort.

In this newly created post, Mr. Sterling will manage Shawmut Investment Advisers' sales forces and oversee the Institutional Client Services Group for the Boston-based bank.

With the bank's institutional business growing, and more expansion expected, Shawmut wanted to have one person overseeing the two different sales organizations that target the institutional marketplace, said Michael J. Rothmeier, executive vice president of Shawmut National Corp.

This way, Mr. Sterling will be able to coordinate the sales effort, Mr. Rothmeier said in a telephone interview.

Mr. Sterling started at Shawmut Investment Advisers last year as a marketer. In. that job, he was targeting large corporations.

Before joining Shawmut, he was a managing director in charge of new business development at Boston International Advisors Inc. Prior to that, he was a senior vice president at Constitutional Capital Management.

Mr. Sterling reports to Mr. Rothmeier, who is also chief executive of Shawmut Investent Advisers.
