HOMESTEAD, Pa. -- A study by community activists in southwestern Pennsylvania found disparities in the practices lenders use with white and black. applicants.
The Mon Valley Initiative, a coalition of activist groups, said Tuesday that its major concerto included lending to blacks throughout Mon Valley and in neighborhoods where they are in the majority.
The organization reviewed the 1992 lending records of Dollar Bank, Integra Bank South, Integra Bank Pittsburgh, Great American Federal, PNC Bank, and Mellon Bank. The report included responses submitted by the banks.
The activist coalition said "the institutions agreed on the significance of these lending issues," expressed disappointment in the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data, and "affirmed a strong commitment to improved lending to area residents."
