Visa sees U.S. probing credit card issuers for bias.

CHICAGO -- Federal regulators are scrutinizing credit card lending practices ever more closely, according to a report released by Visa U.S.A. this week at the American Bankers Association National Bank Card Conference.

The report, "Fair Lending for Credit Card Issuers," provides an overview of the legislative climate and advises card issuers to pay closer attention to loan-discrimination practices, lest federal regulators rule that some of them are discriminatory.

W. Lamar Smith, Visa's vice president of government relations, warned, "It is becoming increasingly clear that mortgage lending will not be the only focus of the government."
