Cirrus tops a million transactions a day.

WESTCHESTER, Ill. -- Cirus System Inc. said the MasterCard-Cirrus automated teller machine network surpassed one million transactions per day in the first week of April.

The network handled 41,000 transactions per hour, or 683 per minute, or 11 per second. The per-minute rate was 50% more than the network averaged per day in 1983, its first year in operation.

Since Cirrus sees only the fraction of ATM transactions done by cardholders away from their home markets, the volume indicates that "consumers are literally using ATMs millions upon millions of times a day, around the world," said G. Henry Mundt 3d, president of Cirrus System.
