Gayland T. Gee of PNC's Common Trust Fund.

Gayland T. Gee is the port-folio manager for the RBB Balanced Fund. He earned the All-Star Proprietary Fund Portfolio Manager's award in the one-year balanced fund category. Mr. Gee also manages the PNC Equity Growth and Income Fund, a common trust fund.

He joined PNC investment Management and Research upon its formation in 1992. Previously, he had been a fund manager for Provident National Bank, the predecessor PNC Bank.

Mr. Gee has spent more than 20 years in the investment profession as a re-search analyst, portfolio manager, and investment strategist. He spent four years with the Colorado National Bank in Denver, where he was engaged in investment research and account management. Prior to that he was with the San Francisco-based investment banking firm of Sutro & Co., where he served as an oil, gas, and drug analyst. Before taking his career to the West Coast, Mr. Gee spent l@ years in the trust department of First Pennsylvania Bank in Philadelphia.

Mr. Gee describes the RBB Balanced Fund as "a typical personal trust account. Among our objectives are long-term performance, long-term capital gain, and some balance in the total return between current yield and total appreciation."

Mr. Gee said the fund virtually mirrors the Provident bank's early purpose in its corporate life, which was to manage trust assets. However, with the creation of the PNC investment Management subsidiary, Mr. Gee acknowledges that his perspective on investment management has changed and benefited by the restructuring of the organization.

"Our approach has broadened in that we have recognized that there are many different styles of investing that can work in the marketplace and that we have many different tools to work with in this organization. We're capable of providing those different strokes for different folks," he commented.

"Internally we have always talked about an investment performance that optimizes our styles. We're not necessarily trying to knock anybody's socks off," he quipped.

Mr. Gee is a graduate of the University of Denver with a bachelor of science degree, as well as a law degree from the University of Denver law school.

The lack of any high peaks around Philadelphia has Mr. Gee and his family traveling to Colorado to satisfy their appetite for skiing. "One of the reasons I'm here [in Pennsylvania] is that my wife is a medical professor. But my two boys regard themselves as Pennsylvanians."

Mr. Gee shared what may be an apocryphal story about the name of his fund. The "RBB" portion of the name, he says he has heard, stands for "red brick building", the original Structure that housed the Provident trust department.
