First Virginia to make Fitzpatrick its CEO.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. -- First Virginia Banks Inc. said Wednesday that Batty J. Fitzpatrick will become chairman and chief executive when Robert H. Zalokar retires at yearend.

Mr. Zalokar, 66, has been with the bank for 39 years. He will continue to serve as chairman of the board's executive committee.

Mr. Fitzpatrick, 54, a 25-year First Virginia veteran, had been one of the bank's top four officers.

Another contender, Paul H. Geithner, 64, will retain his position as president and chief administrative officer until he retires next year.
