Bank of Montreal asks for big board listing.

MONTREAL -- Bank of Montreal has formally applied to the New York Stock Exchange for authorization to have its common shares listed.

Once this step is completed, the bank expects trading of its shares to begin on Oct. 27, making it the first Canadian bank to have its stock traded on the Big Board.

Founded in 1817, Bank of Montreal has been conducting business continuously in the United States since opening a New York office in 1818.
