Newman confirmed for Treasury position.

WASHINGTON - The Senate confirmed Frank Newman yesterday as deputy Treasury secretary, replacing Roger Altman, who as forced to resign after members of Congress complained about his role in the Whitewater controversy.

Newman, 52, joined the Treasury in May 1993, as under secretary for domestic finance after six years with BankAmerica Corp., where he was chief financial officer. Before that, he spent 13 years with Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco.

Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen was expected to swear in Newman late yesterday following the Senate vote.
