MBIA, Cap Re, Mattingly to aid New York groups for the mentally retarded.

New York Yankees first baseman Don Mattingly has again teamed up with members of the financial guaranty industry to raise money for retarded citizens in New York State.

For the ninth baseball season in a row, Municipal Bond Investors Assurance Corp. said it will donate $100 for each of Mattingly's base hits this season. And, in its sixth year of participating in the program, Capital Re Corp. will donate $200 for every run batted in by the Yankee captain.

The funds donated by MBIA and Capital Re will be added to the proceeds of the annual MBIA Invitational golf and tennis tournament. The tournament, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, is scheduled for Sept. 19 at the Mount Kisco Country Club and Whippoorwill Club in Westchester County, N.Y.

The money raised by Mattingly's batting and the tournament will go to the Westchester-Putnam Special Olympics and the Westchester Association for Retarded Citizens.

Last year's tournament raised a record $340,000, bringing the event's nine-year total to $1.5 million, MBIA said in a press release. Last year, Capital Re and MBIA combined to raise $32,600, based on Mattingly's 86 RBIs and 154 hits. Last year, MBIA also donated $300 for each of the Yankee star's 17 home runs. In the past eight seasons, Mattingly's hitting acumen has helped raise more than $215,000 for the charities.
