Fleet and Bank of Boston swap execs.

Raiding the competition for management talent is a timehonored tradition in private banking.

But Fleet Financial Group and Bank of Boston appear to be taking the practice to new heights.

Bank of Boston. which recently lost the chief of its flagship private banking unit to Fleet. has replaced him with a key executive from Fleet Investment Services.

James H. Vineburgh, formerly an executive vice president at the Providence, R.I., banking company, was named president and director of Bank of Boston's private bank in Massachusetts, the largest unit in a five-state operation.

Mr. Vineburgh succeeds Paul R. McConnell, who jumped to Fleet Bank of Maine this summer as president and chief executive.

The Massachusetts post had been vacant since April, when Mr. McConnell moved to Florida as chief executive of the company's private banking unit there.

Bank of Boston's private bank, which also has offices in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine, manages $13 billion of client assets.

At Bank of Boston, Mr. Vineburgh will be responsible for all private banking activities in Massachusetts, and will oversee a staff of more than 200. He reports to Susan P. Haney, the private bank's president.

At Fleet Investment Services, he managed the personal asset management division Prior to that. Mr. Vineburgh was head of the private banking and trust divisions at Connecticut Bank and Trust Co.

Boston Private Bank and Trust Co. has appointed Kate Sides Flather to the company's board of directors.

Ms. Flather is also president of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and serves on the Statewide Advisory Council for the Office for Children.

Boston Private. which was founded in 1987. provides investment and private banking services to high net-worth individuals, their families, and their businesses.

The bank, which manages $125 million of assets, also serves institutional clients.
