Europay signs Cariplo into debit program.

WATERLOO, Belgium -- Europay International, the European payment system closely affiliated with MasterCard, said the world's largest savings bank has signed on to the edc/Maestro debit program.

Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lombarde, the Milan-based institution known as Cariplo, will be accepting the debit cards by mid-1995 at the 13,000 point of sale terminals operated by its data processing subsidiary Setefi.

That is Italy's largest POS network. Two others, Servizi Interbancari and Cilme, have been handling edc/Maestro at 2,000 terminals since August.

An initial 800 of the Setefi terminals are already on-line for edc/Maestro. That number is scheduled to surpass 2,000 by yearend, when 800 Cariplo automated teller machines will also be open to Cirrus and Eurocard-MasterCard cards.

Europay said that since edc/ Maestro debuted in Europe 15 months ago, more than 273,000 terminals and 57 million Eurochecque and bank debit cards have become active in the program.
