Groundbreaking for credit unions' card operation.

The card service division of CUNA Service Group broke ground Monday for a $10 million office building and addition to its card production center in Middleton, Wis.

The project will complete a program the Credit Union National Association began five years ago to bring the card operation in-house, said Keith Floen, senior vice president of the card division.

The card services unit is the largest Visa and MasterCard processor for credit unions in the country. More than 2,250 credit unions are in its program, with more than 4.5 million accounts and nearly $4 billion in outstandings.

The CUNA card affiliate also announced the hiring of Darko Kalan as vice president of operations and finance. He will be responsible for financial planning and card operations, including billing and settlement.

Mr. Kalan was previously a senior vice president at Rocky Mountain BankCard System, a unit of First Bank System Inc., Minneapolis.
