S&P selects Centura for SmallCap 600.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Centura Banks Inc. has been chosen for the Standard & Poor's SmallCap 600, a new stock index that is designed to track the performance of small-capitalization companies.

Centura was selected for inclusion in the S&P index after an evaluation of its size, liquidity, industry representation, and financial health, the rating agency said.

The SmallCap 600 is designed to provide a benchmark of small capitalization stock performance for investors and market analysts.

The median market capitalization of stocks in the S&P SmallCap 600 is $257 million.

Other banks included in the stock index are First Bancorp., Riggs National Bank, Union Planters Corp., and Sovereign Bancorp.
