Mark Robinson, longtime adviser to Gov. William F. Weld, will resign this week as secretary of administration and finance to join the Boston law firm of Bingham, Dana & Gould, according to sources in the administration.

Robinson and Weld met when they worked in the U.S. attorney's office in Boston, and they continued their friendship at the U.S. Justice Department and later at the law firm of Hale & Dorr.

Robinson's expected successor is Charles D. Baker, the state secretary of health and human services.

Since taking office, Robinson has been widely acknowledged as one of the governor's closest advisers. Before succeeding Peter Nessen as secretary of administration and finance in 1992, he was Weld's chief of staff.

At Bingham, Dana & Gould, Robinson is expected to act as of counsel to the finn and represent the firm in matters of business litigation.

Baker, 38, has been with the administration since Weld took office in 1991. Before joining state government, Baker served as the director of media relations for the New England Council Inc. He also served as communications director for the Massachusetts High Technology Council.
