Maryland sales tax and revenue receipts in September were $163.4 million, an increase of almost 11% over the previous September level of $142.2 million, according to Louis Goldstein, the state's comptroller.
The increase in September revenue, which represents August retail activity, is the fastest rate of growth in the state since February of last year, Goldstein said.
Goldstein also reported that Charles County showed the fastest growth in sales tax revenue in fiscal 1994, which ended June 30. Carroll, Howard, Garrett, and Wicomico counties also showed high growth rates, which "reflects the development of more rotall businesses and growing population in these areas," the comptroller said.
Balmore County continued to produce more revenue in fiscal 1994 than any other jurisdiction.
The state's fiscal 1994 sales and use tax receipts totaled more than $1.8 billion.
Construction and consumer-related categories of purchases drove much of the growth, Goldstein said. "Maryland's two largest categories of sales tax collections continue to be the taxable food and beverage and the general merchandise groups," he said.
