Bottomline creates software for electronic check transfer.

Bottomline Technologies Inc., an applications software developer and vendor of automated disbursement systems, will release its first client/server product designed to help ease the transition from paper-based check systems to either Automated Clearing House or electronic data interchange programs.

It is the first release in the company's PayBase architecture, which allows organizations to process both paper checks and electronic funds transfer payments during a single paper run.

For each payment run, the product, called CheckGard for Windows, sends a print file to a laser printer to produce check forms, payment data, signatures and logos, bank data, and the MICR line in one pass on blank paper. Checks can be sorted prior to printing. Records of payment are stored in separate files that can be transmitted to the bank via modem or disc. Custom reports can be printed automatically with each run.

The system operates in conjunction with existing disbursement systems.

Bottomline Technologies is a privately-held firm in Exeter, N.H.
