Steinhart ascends at Bank One as shakeups continue in Texas.

In the third executive shakeup at a major Texas bank this fall, Banc One Corp. said that Ronald G. Steinhart would take over Jan. 1 as chairman, president, and chief executive of its Texas bank.

Mr. Steinhart replaces Harvey Mitchell who is stepping down from the company's day-to-day operations. A spokesman said that Mr. Mitchell, 59, is giving up the job at his own request. He will remain on the bank's board, concentrating on policy and strategy issues.

The company also said that Terry Kelley, 51, would replace Mr. Steinhart as chief operating officer.

Mr. Mitchell's resignation is the latest in a series of shakeups at the top of some of Texas' biggest banks. Nov. 1, BankAmerica Corp. said Larry McNabb would quit as chairman and chief executive of the company's Texas bank to head its global payment services division. A replacement has not yet been named.

Also in November, NationsBank Texas said Rick Parsons would replace outgoing executive Bob Rork as head of the bank's consumer division. Mr. Rork is joining San Antonio-based Alamo Title as president.

The change at the top of Bank One Texas is the first in more than five years. In November 1989, Mr. Mitchell joined the bank as chairman and chief executive, after a stint as interim president and chief executive of Metropolitan Financial Savings and Loan. He replaced Thomas E. Hoaglin at Bank One.

In the early 1980s, Mr. Steinhart and Mr. Mitchell were executives at the former InterFirst Corp. Mr. Steinhart, 54, was vice chairman, president, and chief operating officer, and Mr. Mitchell was president of InterFirst's lead bank in Dallas.

Mr. Steinhart also was vice chairman of First RepublicBank Corp. after InterFirst's merger with RepublicBank Corp. in 1987.
