OMAHA -- Applied Communications Inc. said it has made a significant commitment to smart cards that includes alliances with at least three leaders in the field.
The company, which provides transaction processing and networking systems in 54 countries, said it has a partnership arrangement with Gemplus, the France-based manufacturer of cards with integrated-circuit memories.
The U.S. firm is also working with Mondex in the United Kingdom and Electronic Payment Services' Smart Card Enterprise in the United States on electronic purse systems that can replace cash.
"ACI is aggressively pursuing a single, full-function electronic purse solution," said Sonia Reed, senior product manager. "We also are closely monitoring and participating in activities related to a multiple-function smart card," which might support telephone, transportation, health benefit, debit, and credit applications.
