Royal Bank of Scotland buys thrift assets.

LONDON --Royal Bank of Scotland PLC has acquired, through its U.S subsidiary, seven branches of the failed thrift Coastal Savings Bank, New London, Conn.

Royal Bank's Financial Group is paying $10.7 million to acquire 85% of Coastal Federals's assets-and $117 million in deposits.

The Resolution Trust Corp., the government agency that closes and sells insolvent thrifts, placed Coastal in receivership in June 1992.

Royal Bank of Scotland said the seven Coastal Federal branches acquired by Citizens were to be reopened immediately as Citizens' branches.

Citizens already operates 17 branches in southeastern Connecticut, having acquired the former New England Savings Bank last year.
