Harbinger to roll out version of EDI software for Windows.

Harbinger EDI Services Inc. has introduced a Windows-based version of its electronic cash management and electronic data interchange software.

The Atlanta-based vendor will be testing the software with a select number of its commercial customers this summer. A general rollout will follow in the fall.

Having the software available for Microsoft Windows will allow users to learn and use the system more quickly and efficiently than the DOS version of the software, said David Leach, president of Harbinger.

The software assists companies who want to participate in EDI, the electronic transmission of payments and related information using standard computer formats.

Deborah Williams, a consultant at the Tower Group in Wellesley, Mass., said providing these types of systems is a growing trend in both the EDI and cash-management industry.

"It is still up in the air as to what extent small firms will use EDI, but these system give them the ability to do it straight out of the box," she said.

Stephen Diggs, a product manager at Harbinger, said the Windows version will provide a gateway to communications.

"The system works through our value-added network, which allows businesses to send information into a central repository and forward it to the proper party," he said. "We provide both the hardware and software to execute the transactions."

The Windows version offers the ability to connect to the Interrier as well as allow businesses to create bulletin boards for customers.

Harbinger also plans on offering a product called In Touch Shipper, which will provide barcoding and shipping capabilities.

The system provides the capabilities to handle standard EDI documents.

To handle the financial services aspect, the system offers a cash-management feature that handles electronic funds transfers, stop payments, and wire transfers.
