PC training tools for proof runners.

Abby Inc., a Fort Mill, S.C., provider of proof operator training systems, released a PC-based system that teaches operators to quickly and accurately run a bank's proof work. Operators get customized training for their institution's check processing through the use of digitized speech, animation, and still video.

The system is in place at the Charlotte branch of the $8.4 billion-asset Southern National Bank of North Carolina.

Before implementation, Abby will go into an institution and study its processing. Photographs are then taken of proof items, which are later digitized and loaded into the system. This allows trainees to practice with facsimiles of the actual items without making errors on live transactions.

Each trainee goes through a series of modules, such as how a check moves through the Federal Reserve System, 10-key training, speed drills, and the actual proof training process where employees learn about the proof items and machines used at the bank. Upon completion of the program, Abby says, an operator will be able to run an average of 1,200 to 1,500 items an hour.
