Controllers: pressure to economize still strong.

MONTVALE, N.J. -- Cost-control pressures remain strong in corporate America, according to a survey by the controllers council of the Institute of Management Accountants.

Although more than half of the almost 500 corporate controllers responding predicted higher sales, profits, and cash flows, their companies' spending was generally the same or lower than in the second quarter of last year.

A majority of the controllers projecting sales and profit increases said they would be up by 10% from a year earlier.

By contrast, in comparing capital-equipment purchases, 42% said spending remained the same, 17% said it declined, and 41% said it increased.
