Vending machines with cell modems.

A recent agreement between DataWave Vending Inc. and two Canadian telecommunications companies paves the way for a line of vending machines that perform on-line credit card transactions.

Vancouver-based DataWave said it intends to purchase about 600 radio modems from Cantel Data and Ericsson Communications.

Vending machines equipped with the modems are able to send and receive credit card transaction authorization information over a cellular telephone network.

The first of DataWave's vending machines - known as Electronic Merchandisers - are expected to be installed in Canada by the end of 1994.

DataWave has already established a contract with Kodak to sell film and disposable cameras through the Electronic Merchandiser.
