Boston Fed elevates 1st VP to president.

WASHINGTON -- Cathy Minehan was named president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston Wednesday, replacing Richard Syron who left three months ago to become president of the American Stock Exchange.

Ms. Minehan. formerly the bank's first vice president, is only the second women ever to head a district Fed bank - the first was Karen Horn in Cleveland - and is now the system's only sitting woman bank president.

House Banking Committee Chairman Henry B. Gonzalez, who has been campaigning for more women and minority officials at Fed banks. hailed the appointment.

"For too long, the Federal Reserve has drawn its key decision makers from the ranks of bankers or friends of bankers." he said
