GM cardholders to get SafeCard's sales pitch.

SafeCard Services Inc. has signed an agreement to offer its HotLine credit card registry program to GM cardholders.

The deal was made with Household Credit Services Inc, a unit of Household International, Prospect Heights, Ill., which issues the GM MasterCard to more than seven million cardholders.

GM MasterCard holders calling a toll-free number to activate their cards are prompted to switch into SafeCard's voice activated unit for more information about HotLine.

SafeCard says it is the largest provider of credit card protection services, serving approximately 14 million consumers.

The Household agreement allows SafeCard to use a voice response unit for the first time to offer its most popular fee-based product, said Bob Frechette, executive vice president of sales.

Historically, SafeCard has sold its products and services through telemarketing and statement stuffers, he said.

The program allows consumers to register the GM card and any other credit card with SafeCard. If the cards are lost or stolen, the Cheyenne, Wyo.-based company will call the issuer and ensure that the card is canceled and a new one issued.
