B of A to use IBM imaging for checks.

SAN FRANCISCO -- International Business Machines Corp. said Bank of America will adopt IBM imaging technology for its item processing operations.

The announcement by-the nation's biggest check-processing bank was seen as a breakthrough for IBM after a series of delays in image technology development. In an earlier vote of confidence, Barclays Bank last fall announced plans to use IBM imaging systems in its proof-of-deposit area.

The lead subsidiary of San Francisco-based BankAmerica Corp., which has been testing the proof-of-deposit application, also plans to use IBM technology for image check statements and archiving.

In an initial phase, it will deliver check images to commercial customers. Also in the first phase, imaging will be used to repair checks that the item processing system initially rejects.
