Property values in the city and county of Dallas have gone up for the first time in six years, according to figures released last week by the Dallas Central appraisal district.

In the city, the tax base increased 0.44% from $42.3 billion in 1993 to $42.5 billion this year.

City officials said the rise could help offset some of the projected shortfall in next year's budget that will be presented next Monday, but added that a $33 million difference remains between projected revenue and spending.

In Dallas County, property values climbed 1.08% from $75.7 billion last year to $76.5 billion this year. Of the 26 cities and towns appraised in the county, 22 had property value increases this year.

Coppell, near Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, was the fastest growing city in the county, posting a more than 18% increase in property values.

Dallas officials credited a recovering economy, which had been in a slump for several years, for the upswing in values.
