Futures volume surges on Chicago exchanges.

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Board of Trade and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange both reported record volume for the first half of 1994.

The board of trade said its volume for the first half of the year was up 46% from 1993, to a total of 122 million contracts. About 80% of traded volume on the exchange was in financial futures contracts.

The mercantile exchange said its first-half volume rose 59%, to 117 million contracts. Much of the growth was in short-term interest rate contracts and Eurodollar futures.
