Card Briefs: Bartizan Reader Fills In When Magnetic Strip Fails

YONKERS, N.Y. - Bartizan Corp. said it has introduced a plastic card imprinter that provides "insurance" for times when the magnetic stripe cannot be read.

The new Chargemate 2040 records information from the card onto standard multiple-copy charge forms or directly onto a cash register or printer slip. Therefore, when stripes are unreadable, a clerk does not have to enter the account numbers manually, saving time and avoiding keying errors.

By bypassing the standard card draft and having the data entered directly into point of sale equipment, a merchant saves the typical 1.5- cent cost of the card draft, said Bartizan, which has been in the imprinter business 25 years.

"For every thousand 2040s a bank provides its merchants, savings to the bank will be at least $19,000 every year," said Bartizan president Lew Hoff.
