First Data Extends Natwest Pact for U.K.

First Data Corp. has extended its United Kingdom credit card processing contract with National Westminster Bank PLC.

The agreement, which involves the First Data Resources Ltd. unit, is effective through 2001. First Data signed its original deal with Natwest in 1991.

"It's a very positive step for us," said a First Data spokesman, adding that it was "nice to be endorsed by one of our largest clients.

The First Data unit handles card processing for Natwest's 4.5 million credit card holders.

Patrick Boylan, managing director of Natwest, described the arrangement as a "seamless partnership" that would enable its workers to move the business ahead while First Data fulfills "back-office" functions.

First Data said its customers include the U.K.'s four largest banks - Natwest, Royal Bank of Scotland, Lloyds, and Midland.
