Brode, MasterCard Finance Chief, Dead at 57

Edward H. Brode, senior vice president and chief financial officer of MasterCard International Inc., died on June 21. He was 57.

Mr. Brode joined the New York-based association in 1988, as it was preparing for a growth spurt. He was one of the last senior managers appointed by Russell E. Hogg, who was succeeded as president and chief executive by Alex W. Hart the following year.

Mr. Brode's "dedication and loyalty to MasterCard was unparalleled and a model for us all," said current CEO H. Eugene Lockhart.

Prior to joining MasterCard, Mr. Brode was chief financial officer of Marine Midland Banks Inc. He had worked at the Buffalo-based bank, an early MasterCard member, for 17 years.

Earlier, Mr. Brode spent two years with American Airlines and four years as director of finance for the Clairol division of Bristol-Myers Co. From 1960 to 1965 he served as senior auditor at Arthur Andersen & Co.

He is survived by his wife and three children.
