Capital briefs: Administration Misses D'Amato SAIF Deadline

WASHINGTON - Friday came and went without any word from the Clinton administration on how to save the Savings Association Insurance Fund.

June 30 was the deadline set by Senate Banking Committee Chairman Alfonse M. D'Amato. The New York Republican on June 7 told Treasury under secretary John D. Hawke that a plan to fix the thrift insurance fund was needed quickly.

Mr. Hawke told Sen. D'Amato the administration's solution would be ready "in a very short time." But Friday, a Treasury spokesman said, "We don't have something for today.

"As far as I understand, there is no deadline," Scott Dykema added. "We continue to work on it."
