Card Brief: MasterCard to Roll Out POS System in Musicland

NEW YORK - MasterCard said Musicland Group Inc., a Minneapolis-based specialty retailer of prerecorded home entertainment products, has begun a companywide rollout of MasterCard Automated Point of Sale (MAPP) MerchantNet on-line transaction processing.

The new network has been operating on a pilot basis since the 1994 holiday season at 120 Musicland stores. It will be installed at the remainder of the chain's 1,400 stores, which include Sam Goody, Suncoast Motion Picture Co., Media Play and On Cue, by the end of summer.

MAPP provides access to credit, check, and debit authorization networks, and currently supports more than 380,000 point of sale devices. MasterCard said it expects MAPP to process more than 750 million transactions this year.
