Capital Briefs: Rep. Roukema May Seek N.J. Senate Seat

WASHINGTON - Rep. Marge Roukema, the New Jersey Republican who heads House Banking's financial institutions subcommittee, said Wednesday that she may run for the Senate in 1996.

Rep. Roukema's statement came after Sen. Bill Bradley, D-N.J., announced he will not run for a fourth term next year.

"My interest in the Senate is well known," Rep. Roukema said in a statement. "Senator Bradley's withdrawal only intensifies my interest."

If Rep. Roukema does run, the eight-term congresswoman will get some major financial help.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has pledged $710,000 - the maximum permitted by federal election law - toward nabbing the Democratic seat.

If Rep. Roukema decides to enter the Senate race, she will face GOP contender Rep. Dick Zimmer, a three-term New Jersey lawmaker.

New Jersey Democrats who have said they may consider a run include seven-termer Rep. Robert G. Torricelli, and Rep. Robert Menendez, who is serving his second term.
