Disclosure Inc. Plans To Rescue Service Carrying SEC Data

Coming to the rescue of a popular Internet service that was slated for the cyber-cemetery, Disclosure Inc. said Tuesday that it has reached a preliminary agreement to sponsor a Securities and Exchange Commission data base of corporate filings.

Officials at Disclosure, a Bethesda, Md., document and data base publisher, said they have signed a letter of intent with New York University's Stern School of Business to continue providing free access over the Internet to the SEC data base, called Edgar.

The free service was in jeopardy when its original sponsor, the Internet Multicasting Service, said funding for the project would end Oct. 1.

While companies like Disclosure offer same-day access to Edgar filings for a fee, public-interest groups have lobbied the SEC to maintain the free Internet service, which offers the corporate disclosure documents the day after they are filed with the federal agency.

"Our agreement with NYU is an important extension of our commitment to the educational community which Disclosure has served for over 25 years," said Steven L. Schneider, president of Disclosure Inc. "The access to public company documents and data bases that Disclosure offers on companies worldwide will be an invaluable resource for members of the public."
