Keycorp Using Client/Server System To Automate ATM Balancing Act

Key Services Corp., a unit of Keycorp, has developed a client/server application that automates its ATM deposit and withdrawal balancing.

The system, which officials call ATM Operations Workbench, automates a small but labor-intensive segment of bank operations.

Officials said daily ATM balancing of total cash deposits and withdrawals was once handled almost entirely manually. Before the system was installed, proof operators compared deposits and withdrawals against the ATM's remaining cash and would rekey data from paper-based reports, in- house data base terminals, and the MAC network's Tandem system.

The bank has eliminated those needs by consolidating all reports into a single Windows-like application. The system culls transaction information from several mainframe- and PC-based applications.

"We thought this was an interesting application because of the use of the various tools used in concert with one another," said Kelly Riedel, vice president and project manager with Key Services.

"It pulls all the data from various legacy applications that we deal with down to the single user interface."

Mr. Riedel said five people started the project in July 1994 to ease Keycorp's anticipated growth in ATM transactions.

Keycorp, a $67 billion-asset bank based in Cleveland, operates over 1,400 branch and affiliate offices in 25 states. It has two processing centers for ATM transaction balancing in Dayton, Ohio, and Tigard, Ore., which are staffed by a total of 50 employees.

Mr. Riedel said the new service can handle a fivefold increase in ATM volume without additional staff.

Officials said the system also automates the resolution of customer disputes, such as when mechanical failures or miscounts of cash occur.
