Short Takes: Kemper Official Quits To Run for N.C. Office

A former Kemper Corp. executive is hitting the campaign trail in the Tarheel State.

Michael L. Weisel resigned from the company's financial services unit last month to run for state treasurer in North Carolina. He will compete in the state's May 1996 primary election, Kemper said in a statement.

Mr. Weisel had been a vice president and portfolio manager for the unit, which manages more than $63 billion of assets. He was in charge of managing the general money accounts for Kemper's life insurance division, a spokeswoman said.

Jack Neal, chief executive of Kemper Financial Services said Mr. Weisel's "sound risk assessment skills, knowledge of financial markets, and transactional abilities have contributed to our success. We wish him well in his new quest."
