In Brief: Mich. Banking Chief Adds Insurance Reins

LANSING, Mich. - Patrick M. McQueen is adding "acting insurance commissioner" to his resume.

The commissioner of Michigan's Financial Institutions Bureau since May 1993, Mr. McQueen also will run the insurance bureau beginning Jan. 28, when commissioner David Dykhouse steps down to practice law and teach.

Gov. John Engler appointed Mr. McQueen to the post earlier this month. Mr. McQueen, a banker for 24 years, also previously was president of a small insurance company affiliated with Manufacturers Bank.

He will work for both bureaus until the governor names a permanent insurance commissioner or other developments occur. There has been casual discussion in Michigan about combining the state's financial institutions and insurance bureaus, Mr. McQueen said.

The two bureaus have more overlap these days, because Michigan recently authorized bank affiliations with insurance companies after a state supreme court decision said that the insurance bureau could not deny bank applications to become insurance agents.
