Roundup: Magna's Badgley Retires; Andes Named CEO

ST. LOUIS - Magna Group Inc. said Tuesday its chairman and chief executive officer, William S. Badgley, 65, had retired as of Dec. 30.

In accordance with previously announced succession plans, the board of directors has elected G. Thomas Andes, 52, chairman and chief executive officer. Mr. Andes continues as president, a position he was elected to in 1992. He had also been chief operating officer of Magna Group.

Mr. Badgley said he wanted more time for family, travel, and pursuing other interests as the reason for accelerating, by one year, his retirement. Mr. Badgley, who celebrated his 40th year with the organization in December, will be a consultant to the holding company.

Mr. Badgley began his employment in 1954 with First National Bank of Belleville, Ill., Magna's predecessor lead bank. He rose steadily through the ranks and in 1968 was elected president and CEO.

During his tenure, the company grew from a one-location, $55 million- asset bank to a multibank holding company with more than 100 locations in Illinois and Missouri and over $4.5 billion in assets as of yearend 1994.

Mr. Badgley negotiated the acquisition of over 40 banks and bank holding companies.
