Check Servicer to National Grocers Group In Deal to Supply Antifraud Check Readers

Concord EFS Inc., Memphis, has reached a check servicing agreement with the National Grocers Association and a new credit/debit deal with Star Markets Co., a regional supermarket operator with 37 stores in the Boston area.

Concord began providing a credit and debit system to retail grocers in October 1992.

The newest agreement is on a system for detecting check fraud, which National Grocers Association president and chief executive Tom Zaucha said costs the U.S. supermarket industry millions of dollars a year.

The Concord system will use a reader to catch common fraudulent practices, such as photocopying of checks and and their manufacture on computer printers, a company spokesman said.

The Star Markets processing agreement is for switching and settling services for credit and debit transactions.
