Ahmanson Takes $11M Charge for Cutbacks

H.F. Ahmanson & Co., Irwindale, Calif., took a pretax charge of $11 million in the third quarter for planned personnel reductions and other costs associated with streamlining its mortgage origination.

The streamlining program, which Ahmanson calls Project Home Run, consolidates processing and underwriting in its nationwide loan offices into two loan service centers.

Ahmanson's Home Savings unit funded $1.5 billion of residential mortgages in the third quarter of 1995, down from $2.6 billion in the third quarter of 1994 and from $1.6 billion in the second quarter of this year.

Sixty-six percent of third-quarter production was adjustable-rate mortgages, down from 82% in the second quarter and 99% in last year's third quarter.
