Youth Program Provides the Spark For Expansion of Michigan Group

A $116 million-asset Michigan credit union last month expanded to a city where the adults demanded the services some of their kids were receiving.

The National Credit Union Administration board in a closed meeting Sept. 27 added the city of Novi to Community Federal Credit Union's membership base.

The adults of Novi, population 32,998, got wise to Community Federal because some children who lived in the city but attended grade school in nearby Northville were involved in the credit union's youth program.

Although the youngsters could open accounts at the credit union, their parents could not unless they lived or worked in Northville.

"Parents and other people from Novi would come by asking to join, but we had to turn them away," said credit union chief executive James Cantrell.

The credit union had received and rebuffed pleas from Novians anxious for membership during the past four years before it applied to take on the city, Mr. Cantrell said.

Because the size of the expansion's potential membership was so large, the NCUA board had to vote on it, an agency source said.

The addition strengthens the credit union's position in Wayne and Oakland counties.
