Trouble in the Ranks And on Capitol Hill

As it gathers in Dallas for its 61st annual meeting today and Tuesday, the Credit Union National Association is suffering from growing pains.

The past year has been rough. The failure of Capital Corporate Federal Credit Union tarnished the whole industry and once-coddling legislators have called for tougher supervision. Two of the association's largest members bolted after it took the federal government to court.

The industry and the trade group were seeing more bad news than usual.

"We can no longer just expect that good things are going to happen to us because we are credit unions," said Alabama Credit Union League president Gary B. Wolter.

The special report that appears on this page and the next take a look at two elements of the turmoil in which CUNA is embroiled.

The first article looks at the trade group itself and the growing rebellion among its members.

On the next page, American Banker focuses on Charles O. Zuver, head of the trade group's Washington office, and the political troubles the organization faces on Capitol Hill.
