In Brief: Bankers Trust Win in Suit Over Swaps Downplayed

CINCINNATI - Bankers Trust New York Corp.'s recent court victory over a dissatisfied derivatives client in Britain has little relevance in Procter & Gamble Co.'s pending lawsuit against the bank, the consumer goods company said.

Responding to a report that the bank would submit the ruling by the English High Court of Justice to the judge here, a Procter & Gamble spokesman said that the facts of the cases "are very different."

The British case, in which the court rejected a $65 million claim by an Indonesian firm, PT Dharmala Sakti Sejahtera, did not involve Bankers Trust's U.S. derivatives unit, whose selling practices have been challenged by several clients and regulators, the Procter & Gamble spokesman said.

Unlike Dharmala, he said, Procter & Gamble has supported its claim of deceptive sales practices with transcripts of conversations between Bankers Trust sales people.
