Reuters Offering 'Open Architecture' Trading Software

Reuters Ltd. unveiled a new generation of its financial markets trading software designed to operate on different types of computer hardware.

The new Reuters system, called Kobra, is the latest example of the "open systems" strategy of the British information services company - a concept that allows users to develop and install software applications without having to rely on a single hardware vendor.

Kobra is initially being made available for use on Sun Microsystems Inc. workstations as well as personal computers that use Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT operating system.

Company officials said it will soon offer additional versions of Kobra for use with hardware from Hewlett-Packard Co. and International Business Machines Corp. that work with the two firms' variations of the Unix operating system. The Reuters software will also be compatible with IBM's OS/2 operating system for PCs, officials said.
