In Brief: Hillary ClintonInvited To 1996 Conference

The National Credit Union Administration has invited Hillary Rodham Clinton to speak at its planned conference on lending to people "underserved" by financial institutions.

NCUA Chairman Norman E. D'Amours invited the First Lady to next summer's meeting in Chicago because of her dedication to social causes, such as the rights of children, an agency official said.

"We sincerely hope you will join us Aug. 10, 1996, when credit union managers and volunteers from across the U.S. come together in Chicago to voice their commitment to helping others help themselves," the Nov. 1 letter said. "Your involvement in this important endeavor will be inspiring."

"Serving the underserved is totally in tune with this administration," said an NCUA official. "She has a role in this administration that previous First Ladies haven't."

Asked why the First lady was invited instead of the president, the NCUA official said, "Because it's more realistic to get Hillary."

Still, NCUA sources don't expect to get word from Mrs. Clinton until shortly before the conference is held.
