Tech bytse: Banctec Picks Manager for Its Plexus Unit

DALLAS - Banctec Inc. has named John A. Torkelson vice president and general manager of its Plexus division.

One of the first tasks Mr. Torkelson expects to complete in his new position is moving Plexus' headquarters to Sunnyvale, Calif.

Mr. Torkelson had previously been executive vice president, chief technologist, and chief operating officer of Shared Financial Systems, a Dallas-based software company he founded.

Shared Financial - a provider of computer services and products for financial services, retail, and health care companies - has been acquired by Stratus Computer Corp. and renamed S2 Systems Inc.

Mr. Torkelson has spent much of his career working at companies that provide imaging services to businesses. His experience includes an early stint with Recognition Equipment Inc.

"In the years ahead a significant percentage of our business will come from our document imaging and workflow products," said Grahame N. Clark Jr., Banctec's chairman and chief executive.

"The ongoing growth of the Plexus business unit is very important to our corporate strategy and we feel that the company must have a strong, technology-oriented manager on-site in Sunnyvale with experience in developing leading-edge software products."

Mr. Torkelson is a licensed professional engineer with a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Houston. He also completed the Stanford Executive Institute management development program.
