In Brief: Higher Fees Eyed For Data Searches

Banks may soon be able to charge government officials more for providing them information.

A Dec. 20 proposal from the Federal Reserve Board would allow state member banks to charge $11 an hour for clerical workers and $17 an hour for a manager's time spent filling the government's data requests. Currently, banks may charge a flat $10 an hour for time spent locating or preparing documents.

Comments are due at the Fed by Jan. 20.
