Card briefs: Calif.'s Drexler to Test Smart Cards in Hospitals

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - Drexler Technology Corp., which markets the LaserCard, said that Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. will use the optical memory cards and readers in a field trial at several hospitals in Florida.

The cards, which can hold four megabytes of data, will be offered to 50,000 Florida residents who can use the cards to carry their medical records, Drexler said.

Drexler said it will deliver 10,000 LaserCards in December, and some 40,000 more cards by March 31 to Florida software Systems Inc., an affiliate of Columbia/HCALIF.

Florida Software Systems developed Patient Information Communication System, which will be LaserCard equipped at admission stations and other areas of the hospitals.
